Whether you have been working for 30 years or for three, it’s not unusual to experience periods of stagnation during your career. If you feel like your career progression is slowing down, take these steps to recharge it.
1. Determine your passion
If you’re feeling stalled in your career, it may be time to reconsider what you want to do. The job you once loved might no longer give you the personal fulfillment you need. Sit down and write out what your passions are and see how they line up with your current position. If there is no way to align your career with your interests, it might be time to look for a new job.
2. Write down your short- and long-term goals
Whether your want to move up the ranks at your current company or switch careers completely, short- and long-term goals will help fuel your pursuit. Your short-term goals should be reasonable and advance you along your path. Your long-term goals should be lofty and something you truly want — otherwise, you won’t have the proper motivation to achieve it.
3. Take time for professional development
Learning new skills can help you prepare for the job that you want or stimulate your passion for the job you already have. Either way, learning more about a particular trade will open up new opportunities and dialogues that will make whatever job you have more invigorating.
