If you’re thinking about ditching your CPA this year and instead opting to file your taxes using online software, you’re not alone. Nearly 100 million taxpayers last year submitted their individual tax returns using the IRS e-filing method, according to IRS.gov. Check out these easy-to-use filing options that will have you enjoying your refund in no time. The best part? They’re all absolutely free tax services.

Free File from IRS.gov

If your income is $57,000 or less, then you are eligible to use Free File, which allows you to use a variety of free software to file your taxes online. Free File opened on Jan. 30, 2013, and it lets you use services offered by commercial software companies, such as TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxACT, TaxSlayer, and more. Some also support state tax returns for free. Also, keep in mind that even if you made more than $57,000 last year, you can still file your taxes online using one of these services, but you may be charged a fee. You can learn more here.

Free File Fillable Forms

If you made more than $57,000 last year, you can e-file your taxes for free by using these online Fillable Forms, which are online versions of the paper tax forms, and they’re “designed for people comfortable preparing their own tax returns,” according to IRS.gov. This option is best for people who are comfortable preparing their tax returns but want the advantages of fast, secure and free e-filing. Fillable forms do only basic math and do not support state tax returns. You can learn more here.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA) Program provides free tax help for people who make $51,000 or less. The way that the program works is that IRS-certified volunteers offer free, basic tax preparation with e-filing to those who qualify. “VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations,” according to the IRS website. You can learn more here.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)

If you’re 60 years or older seeking tax preparation assistance, then the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program may be for you. The TCE Program specializes in tax help, answers questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors, and many of the IRS-certified volunteers are retirees associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
